FabuLAB is developing an innovative digital language learning platform for older adults
FabuLAB is developing an innovative digital language learning platform designed for older adults to enhance their language skills while supporting cognitive health and quality of life. Research shows that learning a foreign language can reduce the risk of/delay dementia and cognitive decline.
FabuLAB aims to redefine the language learning experience for older adults, while simultaneously supporting cognitive health and enhancing overall quality of life. Recent research highlights that learning a foreign language can significantly reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s, as well as slow the natural decline of cognitive reserve associated with aging (Bak et al., 2014; Bialystok et al., 2016). Among various interventions designed to preserve cognitive function—such as physical exercise, cognitive training, and nutritional programs—foreign language learning has been shown to produce some of the most profound and lasting benefits (Klimova, 2018).
FabuLAB’s initiative builds on these findings by designing a new digital language learning (DLL) platform tailored specifically to the cognitive, emotional, and motivational needs of older users. Unlike conventional language learning applications that target younger or middle-aged learners, this platform will integrate age-sensitive pedagogical methods, memory-enhancement techniques, and adaptive pacing mechanisms. The goal is to create a learning environment that is not only educational but also cognitively stimulating and psychologically empowering.
Through carefully structured modules, the platform will help older adults develop practical language skills while strengthening memory, focus, and problem-solving abilities. In doing so, it contributes both to lifelong learning and to the prevention of age-related cognitive decline. By making language learning accessible and engaging for senior users, the project aims to promote healthy and active aging, social inclusion, and digital literacy, key factors in maintaining well-being in later life (Ballesteros et al., 2015; Ware at al., 2017). Ultimately, FabuLAB's innovative approach positions language learning not merely as an academic pursuit, but as a holistic tool for cognitive health, social connection, and emotional resilience in older adulthood.
